The New Jewish Voice (NJV), a publication of United Jewish Federation (UJF) of Stamford, New Canaan and Darien, is the Jewish community’s newspaper, dedicated to keeping readers informed about people, organizations, and synagogues in the local community. Over 6,000 households receive the New Jewish Voice, as a gift courtesy of UJF, nine times a year.
The mission statement of the New Jewish Voice is:
● To engage, connect and inform about our Jewish community
● To promote a positive image of UJF, our local Jewish community organizations and Israel
● To provide a vehicle for local agencies, synagogues, and organizations to reach the broader Jewish community
Earlier this year, UJF conducted a community survey to help guide the future of the NJV. The goal of the survey was to obtain feedback regarding the current relevance of the newspaper, its usefulness to the community and obtain any recommendations regarding changes to improve it. The feedback received from the respondents was very valuable. Several suggestions were made including adding a community calendar so that events taking place 2 to 3 months in the future could be well communicated to readers. Suggestions also included that the NJV be used to show the impact of programs that Federation funds. Some of the suggestions made have since been implemented.
The New Jewish Voice provides local Jewish agencies and synagogues in the community opportunities to share articles relating to happenings in their organizations and future events. Every local Jewish organization is able to access equal coverage in the paper, should they choose to participate. The publishing process—from article submission to printing and mailing—takes almost a full month. This makes it challenging to cover international news in real time, but ensures the NJV remains a reliable record of local stories, celebrations, and community life.
A diverse committee of community volunteers works with UJF staff to assemble each issue. An outsourced publisher lays out each issue, it is reviewed by the committee and sent to print before being mailed to homes. The costs are covered by United Jewish Federation.
The New Jewish Voice belongs to the community it serves, and all agencies and organizations are encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunity to share their voices and strengthen the collective Jewish story.
Any comments or ideas for articles for the NJV, can be shared with Aaron Gaberman, UJF Associate Director at aaron@ujf.org
