As fall arrives, volunteers with the Herbert and Sarah M. Gibor Reading Partners program are heading back into Stamford public schools to help children in grades K–3 strengthen their reading skills and build confidence. The program provides critical one-on-one reading time, giving students the support they need to succeed academically while fostering a love of learning.
The Herbert and Sarah M. Gibor Reading Partners program, supported by United Jewish Federation (UJF) of Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien, has been a cornerstone of the Stamford community for over 20 years. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include multiple locations across the city, including 13 public schools and afterschool programs helping over 1,000 children.
Volunteers commit just one hour per week during the school year, working under the guidance of Team Leaders who provide training, mentorship, and ongoing support to ensure each student receives individualized attention. No prior tutoring experience is required, just a love of children and a desire to make a positive impact.
The success of the program would not be possible without the dedication and leadership of the program’s Team Leaders, whose guidance, encouragement, and expertise help volunteers make a meaningful difference every week. Thank you to Rhonda Ginsberg, Ena Sarkar, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Barbara Kennedy, Wanda Kowalski, Linda Bova, Gayle Rothman, Anita Katz, Lois Dreyer, Leah Baker, Pam Hirschfeld, Judith Roll, Margaret Mahoney, and Terry Newman.
This October, team leaders and volunteers will meet to learn the latest reading techniques and strategies to support students on their learning journey.
Through these efforts, Reading Partners continues to nurture young minds, foster mentorship, and strengthen community connections across Stamford.
