My First Year as Israeli Community Shlicha

BY EDEN REFAELOVICH

One year ago, I began an incredible journey that changed my life. I left my job, family, and friends behind, moving to the other side of the world filled with many fears and expectations. Today, after a full year here, I am proud of the path I’ve taken. My expectations went beyond, and my fears have disappeared.

Over the past year, I’ve learned a lot about myself, grown personally and professionally, and most importantly, I’ve deepened my understanding of the Jewish community in America. I’ve come to truly appreciate the strong connection we all share, no matter where we are in the world and the importance of Israel in our daily lives.

During this year, I’ve connected with hundreds of children, teaching preschool classes, reading Israeli-themed books at PJ Library’s Wacky Wednesday, working at the JCC summer camp, and teaching Sunday school. I’ve also had the privilege of engaging with teens through BBYO, BCHA, leadership programs, holiday celebrations, and community events.

I’ve spoken at synagogues, participated in services, joined community members for Shabbat meals, organized events for young adults, and collaborated with various organizations to create meaningful programming for all ages.

I have built meaningful connections and engaged with many of you at celebrations, and community gatherings. Even during difficult times, like the recent war, I felt how much you care and support me here.

Together with the JCC, United Jewish Federation (UJF) runs a “Shulchan Ivrit” to strengthen and practice Hebrew language skills.

As part of our community’s partnership with Afula Gilboa, we launched two pen pal projects between schools and between families, which continues to thrive and I am proud and happy to stay updated on the friendships that have grown from this program.

For the first time, UJF hosted two IDF soldiers, which was a meaningful experience for all.

Looking forward, together with the Israel Committee, I am working on new ways to create an even greater impact and bring Israel closer to everyone in Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien.

Thank you all for being a part of this journey. Your presence, participation, and support unite us as one community, no matter where we are in the world. And, of course, your ongoing support through the Federation is what makes my role here as Shlicha possible.

I wish us all a year filled with hard work, meaningful achievements, success, and, most importantly, may all our hostages return home soon.
