THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA
by Philip Roth
Tuesday, October 13, 2020
7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
Presented by Susan Herbst
Susan Herbst will review Phillip Roth’s novel from her perspective as a professor of political science, now at UConn Stamford.
What if Charles Lindbergh, the heroic aviator, had defeated Franklin Roosevelt, the sitting president, in the 1940 election?
In 2004, Philip Roth published his book, The Plot Against America to address issues of Lindberg’s isolationist views, admiration of Adolf Hitler, and openness to anti-Semitism. The novel traces what happens to the Jews of Newark as new federal policies are implemented, such as moving Jews out of urban areas and into the American heartland.
