Designed as a one session overview of autism, participants will learn about:
• characteristics and behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders
• educational, medical and therapeutic intervention options
• teaching, social and behavioral strategies
• developing interventions and family support services in our communities
• parent perspectives on living with autism
Sara Reed will be presenting the workshop from ASRC (Autism Services and Resources Connecticut). Sara is Director of Advocacy and Family Resources for ASRC. Prior to 2012, she was Executive Director of ASCONN which merged with ASRC in 2012 creating Autism Services and Resources Connecticut. She has been a volunteer and Board Member of ASCONN since 1995 and served as President of the Fairfield County Chapter of the Autism Society in 1995-1996. A former corporate, securities and health care lawyer, Ms. Reed has also worked as a special education advocate helping parents team with their school districts to create appropriate programs for their children. She provides training workshops for parents, professionals, faith based organizations, recreational providers and the community through ASRC’s orientation training workshop series provides parent advocacy training programs, sits on state and national committees relating to autism issues and has also presented nationally on autism issues. She has served on the Board of Trustees of The Pine Brook School in Branford, CT and is a member of the advisory board for the Division of Autism Spectrum Services at the Department of Disability Services and sits on the Executive Committee of that board.
