The Herbert and Sarah M. Gibor Reading Partners Program is a program of dedicated volunteer tutors, sponsored by the United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien, and is an affiliate of the National Jewish Coalition for Literacy.  Working one-on-one with young students from kindergarten through third grade, each volunteer devotes at least one hour a week through the school year, spending a half-hour weekly with each of two young students who need a boost in reading skills.  Our volunteers are given initial training by a school reading specialist, and continue their work under the guidance of teachers and other staff.  We provide a handbook, and additional support throughout the school year.  Many volunteers bring some work background in the schools.  Others bring a variety of professional and life skills.  All bring an enjoyment of children and of reading.

Our program began with 13 volunteers in two schools in 1998.  Twelve years later, we currently have over 125 volunteer tutors and programs in 12 locations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford and 11 Stamford elementary schools.
